SCHUYLER COUNTY
This small county is situated on the northern border of the State, the third
in succession from the Mississippi river, and is bounded on the north by the
State of Iowa, east by the county of Scotland, south by Adair, and west by
Putnam, from which it is separated by the Chariton river. The county is about
18 miles square, with the western boundary irregular, but generally straight.
The streams are few, being only the head waters of the Fabiuses. Lancaster,
the county seat is further described on page 178 of this book. The county
contains six townships, as follows: Chariton, Fabius, Independence, Liberty,
Prairie, and Salt River. It is on the line of the extension of the North
Missouri Railroad, and will soon be opened to the world on the highway of
travel, and near enough to market. There is coal in this county, and a
population of nine thousand.
CHERRY GROVE is in the eastern edge of Schuyler county, 10 miles east of Lancaster, the County Seat, on the Memphis road, and is on one of the forks near the head of Middle Fabius, and about nine miles from the Iowa line. Population about 80.

GREEN TOP, the name of a small place in the south edge of Schuyler county, 10 miles south of Lancaster, the County Seat, directly on the line of the extension of the North Missouri Rail Road, and its present Rail Road point is at Macon City, which is 41 miles a little east of south. New Cambria, Callao and Bevier are all exactly the same distance from this place, viz., 40 miles. The country is well watered and timbered. Population 220.

LANCASTER, the County Seat of Schuyler county, is situated pleasantly on a fine rolling prairie, 129 miles a little west of north of Jefferson City, near the line of the extension of the North Missouri Rail Road and only 12 miles south-west of the proposed Quincy and Northwestern Railway, and about eight miles east of the Chariton river. Its nearest point to the Mississippi river is at Alexandria, 54 miles a little south of east. The place contains a good court house and a Masonic Hall, and two churches - one Methodist Episcopal and one Christian - and contains a population of about 600 souls.

TIPPECANOE. This small place is in the interior of Schuyler county, three miles south east of Lancaster, the County Seat, and about that distance from the North Missouri Rail Road. It is 49 miles north of Macon City, at present its nearest Rail Road point.
WESLEY, a small place is in Schuyler county, not far from Iowa, and contains one mill, three blacksmiths and one carpenter. The place is not marked on the maps.
