William Cook





William Cook, farmer and stock raiser, was born in Schuyler County in 1843, and has followed farming in his native county since his boyhood. He is the third of fourteen children born to Charles and Ann (Slightom) Cook, natives of England and Virginia, respectively. The father came to the United States in 1837, when twenty-four years of age, and settled upon a farm in Schuyler County, Mo., where he died in January, 1887, at the age of seventy-four. The mother was a daughter of John J. Slightom.

William Cook was reared by his parents, and in July, 1862, enlisted in Company G, Twenty-seventh Missouri Infantry, being mustered out at Louisville, Ky., in June, 1865. He began life a poor man, but is now a well-to-do citizen of Schuyler County, and owns a finely improved farm of 223 acres, which is well-stocked and equipped for farming.

In 1867 he was united in marriage, to Miss Mary J. Lambert, daughter of James and Mary (Tingle) Lambert, natives of Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Cook have been blessed with eight children : Mary A. (deceased), Oscar (deceased), Edward, Viola, Ida May, Charles, Oliver (deceased), and Bertha. Mrs. Cook is a member of the Baptist Church, and a well esteemed and worthy lady. Mr. Cook is a Republican, and one of the enterprising and energetic farmer citizens of the county.
